10 Things to Do at Kittatinny Campgrounds for Families

We received free lodging at this camping. All opinions are my own.

If you’re looking for a family friendly camping destination in the Northeast, Kittatinny Campgrounds offers the perfect mix of outdoor adventure and relaxation. Whether you prefer tent camping, RV camping, or staying in one of their cozy cabins, there’s something for every family to enjoy.

This past week, we took a little road trip from Central Pennsylvania to the beautiful Catskill Mountains for a few days of camping at Kittatinny Campgrounds. Our last visit was back in 2022, when the boys were still little, so it was extra special to return and experience it all again through their eyes a few years later.

We were looking forward to slowing down, spending time outdoors, and making new family memories and Kittatinny was the perfect place to do just that. From fishing on the Delaware River and bike rides around the campground to relaxing by the creek and cozy evenings around the campfire, here are some of our favorite things to do during our stay.

1. Go Fishing on the River

One of the biggest draws to Kittatinny Campgrounds is its beautiful location along the Delaware River. If you’re staying in one of the riverfront cabins like we did, you’ll have easy access to the water, making it incredibly convenient to head out for an early morning or evening of fishing.

My boys love to fish plus it’s a peaceful way to spend time together while taking in the scenic views. We arrived on Monday and it was a beautiful sunny day. The river was calm and perfect for fishing and swimming.

Tip: Pack folding chairs, sunscreen, and a small tackle box so you’re always ready for a relaxing day by the river. I also like to have my kids wear a life vest at all times!

2. Explore the Creek

One of our favorite ways to spend the mornings was taking a walk around the campground while exploring the creek along the way. It’s a great excuse to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and see what you can discover around each bend.

Kids will love looking for interesting rocks, watching the water flow by, spotting wildlife, and stopping by the playground all while parents can enjoy the chance to unplug and take in the beauty of nature.

3. Ride Bikes Around the Campground

Bringing the boys’ bikes turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. During our stay, we had quite a bit of rain, which caused the Delaware River to rise on Tuesday and made it unsafe for swimming. Thankfully, there was still plenty to do, and the boys had the best time riding their bikes around the campground.

The campground roads are great for biking, and it’s such a fun way for kids to explore, burn off energy, and enjoy the outdoors. Even with a change in plans because of the weather, bike rides quickly became one of the highlights of our trip.

4. Cook Easy Meals Outdoors

Another of our favorite parts of camping is enjoying meals outdoors, and having a little plan ahead of time makes it so much easier. We love making simple meals that can be prepared over the fire pit or on the grill, like hot dogs, burgers, foil packet meals, and breakfast cooked outside.

Staying in a cabin also made mealtime much more convenient. Having a refrigerator to keep groceries fresh and an equipped kitchen gave us the flexibility to prepare meals indoors when needed, while still enjoying the fun of cooking and eating outside.

Another tip for families is to bring some meals prepared from home. Not only does it save time during your trip, but it can also help save money compared to eating out for every meal. With a little planning, you can enjoy delicious family meals while spending more time outdoors and less time worrying about where to eat.

5. Enjoy Meals Outdoors

During our stay, the boys were so excited about the camping experience that they even requested breakfast outdoors. There’s just something special about starting the day surrounded by nature, enjoying a meal together, and taking in the peaceful sounds of the campground.

From breakfast at the picnic table to simple lunches and dinners outside, eating outdoors somehow makes every meal feel a little more special. These are the little moments that turn a regular trip into lasting family memories.

6. Enjoy the Delaware River Activities

One of the highlights of staying at Kittatinny Campgrounds is having the Delaware River right at your doorstep. During your stay, you can take advantage of their river activities, including options like kayaking, canoeing, rafting, and tubing, perfect for families looking to add a little adventure to their camping trip.

We were especially excited to experience the river, but during our visit, we had several days of rain, which caused the water level to rise and made our planned river trip unsafe, so it had to be canceled. While we were disappointed, we completely understood that safety comes first, and it gave us even more reasons to enjoy the other activities around the campground.

Even without getting on the water this time, we loved spending time by the river, taking in the views, fishing, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. It’s definitely an activity we hope to come back and experience on a future visit!

7. Spend the Evening Around the Fire Pit

No camping trip feels complete without a campfire.

Roast marshmallows, tell stories, play card games, or simply enjoy watching the fire as the sun goes down. It’s the perfect way to end each day.

8. Stay in a Cabin

If you love the idea of camping but still enjoy some of the comforts of home, staying in one of Kittatinny’s cabins is a great option, especially for families.

One of the things we love most about cabin camping is how easy it makes the trip. Instead of packing a tent, sleeping bags, and tons of camping equipment, we only need to bring the essentials like clothes, food, kids bikes and fishing gear. Having a comfortable place to sleep, a refrigerator to store groceries, and an equipped kitchen makes the experience feel simple and stress free.

Cabin camping gives you the best of both world. You can spend your days outdoors exploring, fishing, biking, and enjoying nature, while still having a cozy place to come back to at the end of the day.

9. Unplug and Spend Time Together

One of the things we appreciated most was how easy it was to disconnect from screens and reconnect as a family. The cabin and the camp store were the only places with WiFi connection. It was the perfect way to unplug for a while.

Without the usual daily distractions, we found ourselves talking more, exploring more, and simply enjoying being together.

10. Slow Down and Enjoy the Little Moments

The best memories often aren’t the big adventures, they’re the simple ones.

Watching the river flow, sipping coffee outside, reading a book while the kids play, hearing birds in the morning, and ending the day under the stars are the moments that make camping so special.

Final Thoughts

Kittatinny Campgrounds is a wonderful destination for families looking to enjoy the outdoors at their own pace. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a longer vacation, there are plenty of ways to stay active, relax, and create lasting memories together.

If you’ve been thinking about planning a camping trip, this is definitely a place worth adding to your list.
